A macOS search tool that finds files by what's in them instead of their filename.

What it does

Spotlight matches filenames, and filenames are often meaningless. Found It! lets you search for a file by what it contains or what it was for.

Technical details

Indexing
A file-system event creates a record right away. A background pass then adds OCR text, metadata and an embedding.
Search
The query is turned into structured filters, then results are ranked by keyword and semantic similarity.
Scope
Desktop, Documents and Downloads. Files never leave the machine.
The first pass indexes the file immediately. The second adds OCR and embeddings in the background.

Engineering decisions

The background pass updates each record in place instead of replacing it, so the search index always points at a live record and a file stays searchable the whole time it's being enriched.
