Experience
Sentry Devices
Summer internship at a Vancouver startup that tracks temperature-sensitive shipments with Bluetooth tags.
The company
Sentry attaches a Bluetooth tag to each shipment. Gateways along the route read the tags and send their data to the cloud. Operators use the app I built to see where each shipment is and whether anything went wrong in transit.
What I did
- Application
- I built the operator app in React Native and TypeScript, from sign-in to live shipment tracking and alerts.
- Simulator
- I built a simulator that generates realistic data for the whole fleet from numerical models, so the team could test every part of the system months before the hardware was ready.
- Geofencing
- I added zones that detect when a shipment enters or leaves them, and a live map that shows device faults.
- Requirements
- I wrote the product requirements through six revisions and checked each one against the real backend code.
Results
Hardware review
Before the firmware was locked, I went through the tag's design and raised 9 issues. Two of my fixes were adopted into the shipping design.
Requirements review
I tested the requirements against the real platform code and hardware and found 14 problems before development started.
